INCREASE OF INFLAMMATORY CELL MIGRATION AFTER THE TREATMENT WITH A SUNFLOWER SEED OIL ENRICHED PRODUCT

Introduction and Objectives: Sunflower seed oil contains high concentration of essential fatty acids, especially linoleic acid (LA). It is frequently used in scars prevention and treatment. The treatment with LA by different routes induces the migration of leukocytes. The aim of this work was to study the effect of the treatment with a sunflower seed oil-enriched product (SSO) in inflammation.


Methods and Results: Swiss mice were used in this study. The inflammatory ability of SSO was evaluated by using the models of cotton pellet granuloma, peritonites, air pouch and skin healing. In the granuloma assay, a cotton pellet was implanted in the subcutaneous. Then the mice received saline solution (Control) or SSO by intraperitonial (ip) or subcutaneous (sc) routes during 6 days. The SSO was injected ip or in the air pouch to evaluate the cell recruitment ability. After 24 and 48 hours both cavities were washed in order to obtain and to quantify the cells. In the skin healing model it was induced a lesion which was daily treated with SSO by topical route. After 1, 3 and 10 days the mice were killed and lesions biopsies were used to hystopathological analysis. The SSO treatment did not alter the granuloma, but it has induced an intense cellular influx. In the peritonites the macrophages were predominant, while in the air pouch the neutrophils were the main population, what was also observed after topical application of SSO in the skin lesion.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the SSO exerts per se a potent inflammatory effect in different murine models such as peritonites, air pouch and skin healing.
